What is Hingwashtak Churna

Hingvastak Churna or  Hingwashtak churna is a powdered form of eight herbs. Hingvashtak powder has innumerable benefits or uses.

It is Hingu Ashtaka Churna which means Hingwastak has eight ingredients or contents including hing or asafoetida. The contents of Hingastak powder are easily available on kitchen shelves and useful in digestion.


This powder is used in problems of the digestive system. According to Ayurvedic texts, β€œama” or body toxins accumulate due to food. The body's toxins block the pathways of nutrients and prevent them from reaching the target tissues. This causes the undernourishment of the body and lowers the functionality of tissues. Accumulation of body toxins lowers the and paves the way for diseases. Hence the food consumed must be healthy and get digested well in time. A well-digested food nourishes and boosts body health. Ayurveda acharyas suggest a preparation called β€œHigvastak churna”  to increase digestion and relieve indigestion. Ingredients or contents of Hingwshtak churna or powder

Ginger :

Dry ginger is used in this powder. Ginger has innumerable health benefits  It not only helps in digestion but also helps to normalize blood sugar level. Long Pepper or Pippali β€“

( Long pepper kindles appetite and sets right digestion. It is helpful in weight loss when used with honey and acts as a vajikarana food when used with milk.

Black Pepper

Ajwain or Carom Seeds

Ajwain is widely used in Indian cuisine. It is used in various home remedy to ease indigestion and flatulance. Omam water is a well known home remedy for loss of appetite.

Rock Salt or Sendha Namak:

 Rock salt improves digestion and enhances the taste of food. It supplies minerals needed by our body.It is recommended in rheumatoid arthritis, indigestion and as a teeth whitener.

Cumin Seeds or Jeera

– Cumin seeds help to reduce bloating caused due to indigestion. It balances vata and aids in easy digestion. Cumin seeds tea also help in weight loss

Black Cumin Seeds or Kala Jeera

This spice also has almost the same health benefits as regular jeera.

Pure asafoetida or Hing

Hing helps in indigestion, flatulence, and bloating of the stomach. Hence it is used in Indian cuisine to make the food easy to digest. It increases appetite and promotes good circulation of blood.

How to Use Hinwashtaka Churna ?

Hingvasta churna must be used with ghee along with hot rice. It should be used with the first bolus. The recommended dose should not exceed 1- 3 gms per day.

Consume ΒΌ teaspoon of Higvashtak churna with an equal quantity of ghee before consuming food.  It is a boon for foodies who want to relish food without landing up in indigestion. This can be taken in divided doses.

This should be strictly taken under medical supervision. People suffering from ulcers of the digestive system must refrain from using this.

Hingwastak powder may cause exaggeration of piles in pregnant ladies and may also cause acidity. Hence persons with haemorrhoids, peptic ulcer, and pregnant ladies should use this under strict medical supervision.
